Magency! 01/18/2012
The First in my series of interesting, entertaining and possibly useless information! The entrance for a dancer can be a defining moment. In the Egyptian routine, it is often referred to as the "Magency" or a variation of that word, which, though debatable, I believe comes from the French word "Emergence" which means to ...tada Emerge! or in Texas parlance-Git on the Stage and Dance! Add Comment Let me entertain you! 01/09/2012
The future is what you make of it, and I'm going to make it a great one this year! I shall endeavor to entertain, amuse and enlighten my peeps with interesting and perhaps sometimes useless info regarding music, dance, art and travel. That is my goal for 2012. Come along for the ride! The first event of the year will be the Austin Bellydance Association's Jukebox Bellydance show-a fun family-friendly event highlighting bellydance to non-bellydance music! A great intro for people who are not very familiar with the dance and music. At the Doughrty Arts Center on Barton Springs Road in Austin Texas. Saturday January 21st 7pm. Sabaya at Copa! 08/11/2011
Coming up this Saturday is the monthly Sabaya show at Copa on Congress in Austin TX and I get the pleasure of dancing with those lovely ladies! This month is a special presentation of Eliktrik Kids Electric/Techno Bellydance music created especially for the dancers. I will be dancing to African Jazz and am rather jazzed about it myself! So if you are in the Austin area, come on out to Copa for some serious bellydancing fun! A Sultan's Feast 06/26/2011
Coming up July 23rd- Midnight Breeze Dance Co. presents A Sultan's Feast! A two-hour Dinner and Bellydance Show highlighting San Marcos' own talented Midnight Breeze and Gypsy Hips Dance ensembles, as well as some very special guests! Doors open at 6:30, Dinner served at 7. Tickets are $13 in advance and $15 at the door. At the San Marcos Activity Center. Contact Jamie Lynn for tickets. Austin Bellydance Convention 06/08/2011
The Austin Bellydance Convention has come and gone once again-a whirlwind weekend of workshops, shows, shopping, friends and fun. I had the pleasure of performing with my friend Najla of Austin-we danced together in the Friday night show and co-taught our Costuming Workshop on Sunday. Surrounded by dancers of all levels, from the beginner to the professional is great impetus to continue studying this incredible art form. I appreciate that I can take from any teacher of any style and still learn something, a new way to explain a move, a new understanding of the muscles involved in said movement, or simply a new way of listening to the music. Samia Gamal!! 02/13/2011
oooh. Just finished watching a vhs of Samia Gamal clips. Lovely-her smile, her moves, her costumes! The classic egyptian style is fascinating to me-there is a freedom in it that contemporary bellydance overlooks in favor of precise movement and intricate layering. I love that as well, but there is something refreshing about just seeing the body move naturally, albeit in that particular way that makes it bellydance. I shall endeavor to channel Samia Gamal when I dance Classical Egyptian. Egypt 02/09/2011
I have been following the news about the revolution in Egypt. Fascinating to watch history being made. I hope it ends peacefully and successfully for the people. Unfortunately at this time, I will not be going to Cairo as planned in June. Interestingly not because of the political situation, but because of financial issues of my traveling companions which all came out two days before the unrest! So I am apparently not supposed to go to Egypt this year. Perhaps next....just keep dancing! Keep focused. Dance. 12/03/2010
The weather has cooled off a bit (in Texas that means really really pleasant weather!) and the holidays are just around the corner. I am challenging myself to not slack off in my dancing. In fact, I am trying to dance a bit more, watch a few more videos and otherwise keep myself engaged in the dance rather than slip into the all to easy "I'll focus after the holidays" that I have a tendency to. If you can focus now, it will be even easier to continue that commitment after the excitement of the holidays-and goodness knows, I will need something to help manage the extra egg-nog I plan on scarfing down during the holidays! Happy Dancing! World Dance Showcase 2010 10/04/2010
Each fall I produce the World Dance Showcase here in my little town of San Marcos, Texas. It is a full two hour stage show of a variety of world dances. My sister, who is a professional dancer as well, came and danced Sevillanas and then a duet of Classical Indian and Bollywood with me. I also did my Khaleegi debut! We also had a live Irish band, O'Malarkey for our Irish dancer! Also represented was Jalisco, Pop, French Fusion, Egyptian, Turkish, Eastern Europe Folk dance, and Nubian. We had a fabulous turn-out, almost a full house, and raised a nice amount of money for the three charities that we were supporting this year. Each year I have three charities that we support: an Animal oriented charity, a People one, and a Nature one. The audience members each get to chose which charity their money goes to, so it is a great way to support the arts, our community, our furry friends and our environment. Zanzibar! 09/03/2010
I might be going to Zanzibar! And Cairo to dance at the Ahlan wa Salan festival! Wish me luck....now time to focus focus focus! Here's a challenge: Dance 30 minutes every day. Put on music, maybe familiar, maybe unfamiliar and just dance. See what comes out. Everyday. In 3 months, assess your progress. Is it easier to just dance? Has your lexicon of bellydance moves kicked in? | AuthorBellydancer, artist, traveler, designer, musician, boot lover, cat-mommy and wife. Just a few of the things that make me who I am.
