Marhaba, Salam Wa Aleikum and Hello!

Picture

Jamie Lynn is a professional bellydancer  who performs, teaches and produces bellydance and world dance shows in and around the Austin, San Marcos, San Antonio and Central Texas area.  She is best known for Turkish Oryantal and Egyptian Raqs Sharqi but also dances  American Cabaret, Fusion and a bit of Classical Indian and Tahitian as well.  She is a personable performer who loves to interact with her audience.  She believes that to be a  good dancer one must have excellent technique,  love of the music, and (very important!) a sense of  humor.

Jamie Lynn is available for Regional and Local Workshops. Some favorite topics:

TURKISH ORYANTAL Basics
Come learn the basics of Turkish Oryantal style Bellydance in a 2-hour workshop designed to familiarize you with the particular moves and style that characterize Classical Turkish Bellydance. Learn the history of Turkish dance, how to distinguish the music, the basic rhythms and add onto your existing knowledge of Bellydance moves with the singular style that is Turkish.

Bear in mind, this is not Gypsy, Rom or Folkloric Turkish, but rather a style that utilizes aspects of the previously mentioned styles combined with Arabic dance and even some Indian influences.

Bellydance Music!
A workshop to familiarize the dancer with the various genres of bellydance music from Egyptian Classical to Turkish to Contemporary Tribal as well as Beledi, Sha'abi, Khaleegy and more!

You will:
~Learn what instruments, sounds and rhythms characterize
   each style
~Discover the history  behind the music
~Determine which dance style is appropriate for which music
~Get tools to help understand the music and rhythm to dance
   better, whether choreographing or improvising
~Be introduced to new music and a new way of appreciating it!

Jamie Lynn is also available to teach workshops in small and large venues, locally and regionally. Feel free to contact for more information!   Jamie Lynn

Tipsy Gypsies Show

Picture
A lovely way to end out the 2011 year- dancing with some of my most favorite other Austin dancers.

Desert Passion Dance Theatre

Picture
Danced to live improv music by Patrick Gergaud of Eliktikids, a local electroica/bellydance musician!

La Dolce Vita

Picture
The Austin Museum of Art has one of the most beautiful grounds in all of Central Texas: Laguna Gloria. I had the pleasure of being the guest dancer for Troupe Dimali at the Italian Festival. Those Italians love bellydancing, good wine and tasty food in no particular order!

Camparet!

Picture
There is an event every Fall that if you are a bellydancer, you must attend. It's Camparet.  Three and a half days of intense bellydance instruction and marshmallows.  Think all the great things about camp-the friendship, the stars at night, the fun combined with BELLYDANCE. Yee ha.

Shimmy into Saturday at Carousel Lounge

Picture
Nothing kicks off a weekend like a good shimmy! And some sparkles....

The Sultan's Feast

Picture
Once a year, along with my troupe Midnight Breeze Dance Company, we present The Sultan's Feast-a two hour long dinner and dance show featuring our local dancers as well as special guests. This year was the best attended and the most fun by far! There was even a guest appearance from Lily the Camel!

Cafe Shimmy

Picture
The final evening of the Austin Bellydance Convention-a great afterparty at Hot Mama's Espresso Bar. A fitting end to a wonderful weekend of friends, dancing and sharing.

Shimmy into Saturday at Carousel Lounge

Picture
A small intimate gathering is sometimes more fun to dance at than large shows-there is so much interaction with one's audience that the energy just flows like silk!

Cafe Shimmy

Picture
My debut at a new monthly show in Austin Texas-Cafe Shimmy hosted by my dear friend Najla. I don't usually do the splits, but apparently my body decided to do them. Sometimes, it is best to just let the dance carry you away.

Desert Passion Middle Eastern Dance Theatre

Picture
To illustrate some of the moves I taught at my Turkish Technique workshop that afternoon, I danced a Turkish Oryantal style as my opening performance.

Picture
My second piece was an Egyptian Baladi-to one of my favorite songs- Tahtil Shibek.

Sherwood Forest Faire

Picture
Joined The Hands of Fatima for a few weekends of dancing at Sherwood Forest Faire, a Renaissance Faire near Austin Tx. Huzzah!

Raks Helwa at Copa with Sabaya

Picture
For Valentine's, Raks Helwa was invited to dance with Sabaya Bellydance Collective at their monthly show at Copa in Austin. We were pleased to be a part of their fabulous line-up!

Hafla for Ozma

Picture
The first Hafla of the year 2011! Ozma of Japan came to Austin, Texas to visit and asked "are there any bellydance shows going on?" There weren't any scheduled, so my friend Najla and I put one one! A fabulous line-up of some of Austin's best dancers and Ozma, of course!

Performances  2010

Camparet

Picture
There is a particularly fun event in Central Texas called Camparet-a full weekend camp of Cabaret Style Bellydance. This if from one of the performance evenings. Performing in front of a roomful of bellydancers (including the word renowned instructors!) was exciting!

World Dance Showcase

Picture
For the last four years I have produced The World Dance Showcase in San Marcos, TX. It is a full show of dances from all over the world. This year I did Khaleegi and Bollywood with my sister. We also had Nubian, Irish, Jalisco, Turkish, Black Sea folk dances,  Pop, and Flamenco. An awesome line-up of dancers!
I love Khaleegi!

Desert Passion Middle Eastern Dance Theatre

Picture
Veil, Zills -dancing to one of my all time favorite songs Misirlou-this time a "surf guitar" rendition!

Raks Helwa

Picture
Veil work is something that I love but don't do enough of so I am setting myself a challenge to do more veil dancing!

Photo Shoot

Picture
Not so much a performance (although certainly as exhausting as one!) more of performance art-I got to be the model for my friends Claire Grove Stone and Stephen Hopper, two photographers who love to paint their models up and take amazing photos of them! Claire does all the painting herself! Wow.

Raks Helwa

Picture
Raks Helwa on the Fourth Friday of each Month-so much fun to dance with a live band. What is really unique is that not only is the dancing improvisational, so is the music! These guys are so good that they improvise the music on the fly!

Austin Bellydance Convention

Picture
I was honored to be chosen as one  of the dancers for the Austin Bellydance Conventions Happy Hour show with the awesome band Wind and Fingers. I danced to Leylet Hob which is one of my favorite songs ever.

Raks Helwa

Picture
Raks Helwa Rocks! The band was smokin' and the audience was lively! What a great show!

Wonderland Bellydance Show

Picture
Danced at the Wonderland Bellydance Show at the Gemini Playhouse.  Great audience, really nice stage!

Arabian Day at the State Museum

Picture
The Texas State Museum did an Arabian Day to feature their IMAX film Arabia. I was asked to dance along with 1001 Nights Orchestra. We had such a great time performing for the visitors to the museum-most of which had no idea about Arabian Day so were rather surprised (happily, I hope) to see a live band, a bellydancer, and camels!

Hot Mama's Espresso Bar

Picture
A lovely Texas Evening to perform under the oak trees with Dum Tek Support at Hot Mama's Coffehouse!

Photo Shoot!

Picture
So not a performance per se, but my lovely friend Claire Stone did a photo shoot for me and here are the results! Both of the costumes were made by me!

Raks Helwa -April

Picture
Another fabulous Raks Helwa show! Lots of fabulous people in the audience-you know who you are!

George Lammam Ensemble in San Francisco

Unortunately I was not allowed to take photos or video, but while I was visiting San Francisco this month I got to dance with the George Lammam Ensemble at the Pena Pachamama Cultural Center!  It was  a fabulous experience, a small intimate setting with a world class band playing all the best Middle Eastern songs- I danced to Aziza and Leylet Hob. Wish I had photos....ah well, it was a great evening.  Thanks to Amina for inviting me!

Atash at Esquina Tango

Picture
Had the great pleasure of getting to dance with Atash World Music at Esquina Tango's World Music Night. Atash is one of Austin's premier ensembles playing a variety of Middle Eastern, Indian and Pakistani Music. I danced to Leylet Hob-one of my all time favorite pieces of music!

Raks Helwa

Picture
The band (including my husband Dave) played some fabulous improvisations that we all danced to. Love dancing to live music!

Mirage at UT Union

Picture
I was the Headliner at the Mirage Show-the longest running Bellydance show in Austin Texas! First I did a Classical Egyptian piece with Beledi (although I don't have a beledi dress....)

Austin Bellydance Association Jukebox Bellydance Show

Picture
This was one of my most favorite performances BECAUSE....I got to dance to my husband's music! This was an alternative bellydance showcase of bellydance to anything BUT Middle Eastern music. One danced to Led Zepplin, another  to Bluegrass, so I danced to a piece called "Coyote" from my husband's CD RavenSpeak which is sort of Surf Punk meets Spagetti Western. LOVE IT!! I had so much fun dancing to music that he created. T

Carousel Lounge Shimmy into Saturday

Picture
First "Official" Performance of the New Year! I didn't get pics of the New Years Eve gig I did unfortunately! (I actually danced after the New Year had already started! 12:30 am! That's seriously late for me!)

Dancing at Austin's most interesting Arts and Crafts Fair at Christmas time! Danced with the Raks Helwa troupe, solos and we all danced some tribal improv together!

Art for Texas Festival

Picture
A lovely outdoor art and music festival asked me to come and dance as part of their entertainment. It was such a beautiful day under the oak trees.

Austin Bellydance Associations YAAD Show

Picture
We were to take a Year and a Day to work on something for this show. I did a zill "solo". No music, just me and the zills doing patterns, rhythms and accents. It was very fun and a little nerve wracking! But it went over well, I think!

World Dance Showcase

Picture
Produced the third annual World Dance Showcase in September-a fabulous show of world dances to raise money for three local charities! Had a great time this year, lots of great acts: Tango, Hula, Irish, Turkish Bellydance, Nubian and more!

Marakesh Restaurant

Picture
Marakesh Restaurant in Austin Texas held a special dinner and bellydance show in memory of the owner's husband Samir, a good friend whom we all miss. We had a fabulous evening of good food, music, dancing and friends.

Raks Helwa

This is my "vintage" photo. It looks like it was from the '60's. I love it.

Middle Eastern Choreography Competition
