TURKISH ORYANTALThis is one of the quintessential videos of Turkish Oryantal style bellydance. Tulay Karaca (or sometimes spelled Karaja) is a master zill player. The moves are very external, the hip ups are foot driven and lots of spins typify Turkish Bellydance.

Birgul Beray at Orient House in Istanbul is another example of Turkish Oryantal. Nesrin Topkapi in rare live footage. She often danced to Arabic music, but still with Turkish overtones- floorwork, zills, dramatic armwork.
. Zill A Capella Solo
Tulay Karaca was a master of zills. Her a capella zill playing is still unmatched to this day. . Turkish Oryantal/Romani "Fusion"
This clip is a rare combination of Oryantal "Bellydance" and the folkloric Romani style by Inci Adali, a dancer from the 70's. The various gestures are straight from Romani Folkloric but in an Oryantal dance setting (bellydance costume, on stage, etc). The dancer is paying homage to the Romani roots of Turkish Bellydance as much of its background came from Romani entertainers. The music is classic Romani 9/8. |

Another example of good Oryantal and Romani Fusion by one of the top Turkish Dancers Sema Ylidiz. Notice the floorwork which is typical of Oryantal but with Romani gestures.

Turkish Romani
This is an interesting example of OLD SCHOOL Turkish -almost exclusively Romani dance (not bellydance, really, but folkloric) but done in a non-Romani costume and on stage, so another example of "fusion" of Bellydance and folkloric. It is important from a historical standpoint as there is not much footage of early Turkish Bellydance. It may look "raw" to Western eyes, but it is a representation of a cultures art form. |
